Soy Protein – Is It A Good Muscle Builder?
Soy protein is derived from soybeans and like whey protein, it contains a broad spectrum of amino acids. Soybeans are the only vegetables that contain all eight essential amino acids and are a good source of fiber as well as various vitamins and minerals which promote health and well-being.
Is Soy Protein Good For Muscle Building?
In my opinion, the short answer is no. Soy protein contains phyto-estrogens, which mimic the female sex hormone estrogen. Due to this fact, soy protein can elevate your estrogen levels and potentially lower your testosterone levels if taken in high enough amounts.
Obviously, when you’re trying to pack on muscle mass and increase strength, you’ll want to avoid consuming anything that might lower your testosterone levels, since testosterone is the number one muscle builder in the human body.
However, since soy protein contains all of the essential amino acids required for muscle growth, women looking to build muscle can benefit from supplementing with soy protein powder since estrogen is already an abundant hormone in females.
Also, if you’re lactose intolerant and experience stomach discomfort from taking whey protein, you can substitute whey with soy, but keep your overall intake low (20 to 30 grams per day) as consuming larger quantities can potentially lower your testosterone levels and increase estrogen levels.
If you have no issues with whey protein, I recommend that you stay away from soy protein and supplement with a high quality whey protein powder for best muscle building results.
