Glutamine - Is It Necessary For Muscle Growth?



Glutamine, also known as L-Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid that’s found naturally in foods such as meat, dairy and poultry. Your body produces L-Glutamine on its own, therefore, supplementing with extra L-Glutamine would probably not be of much benefit for bodybuilding purposes.

L-Glutamine speeds up the muscle building process by preventing muscle tissue breakdown. L-Glutamine also enhances immune system function which is very important for building muscle as catching a cold or getting the flu can keep you out of the gym for weeks.

Like mentioned, your body can make enough L-Glutamine for its normal needs, but during extremely stressful events (i.e. very heavy exercise or suffering an injury), your body may have a need for more L-Glutamine than it can produce on its own.

L-Glutamine is stored inside muscle tissue followed by the lungs, which is where most of the L-Glutamine is made.

L-Glutamine is very important for removing excess ammonia (a waste product in the body). It also helps your immune system function and is needed for normal brain function as well as proper digestion.

Certain medical conditions, including injuries, surgery, infections, and extreme physical stress can lower glutamine levels, so taking an L-Glutamine supplement may be helpful in these instances.

There’s no direct link between L-Glutamine supplementation and increased muscle size, thus supplementing with extra L-Glutamine for the sole purpose of increasing muscle mass will likely not speed up your gains.

Note: If you're supplementing with creatine and you are considering supplementing with L-Glutamine or you're currently supplementing with L-Glutamine, you're not effectively utilizing these 2 supplements. Both creatine and L-Glutamine compete for the same receptors inside the body, thus using both at the same time will diminish the effects of each supplement.
